Writing 2: Reasons for students dropping out of college
Topic: Going to college is a dream for many people. Some do the work, graduate, and find good jobs. Other students, however, never finish their studies. Write an essay about what causes students to drop out of college.
In the current age of knowledge-based economy, it is irrefutable that a university degree would enhance opportunities to obtain a well-paid job, and a secure future. However, besides those who realize their dreams at university, some have to leave the college with a permanently incomplete ambition. Personally, I believe that college dropouts stem from two major reasons.
In the first place, students may quit university due to the incapability of meeting the financial demands. It should be noted that the expenditure on higher education is usually very high since students have to pay for every subject that they are learning. Moreover, this comes as a real difficulty for those who study far from home as expenses for housing and commuting also need to be covered. It, therefore, turns out to be the sole solution for some students, especially disadvantaged ones, to cancel their university studies and immediately enter the labor market to earn a living.
Second, the temptation of social evils may be blamed for students’ college dropouts. It is a fact that as students progress to university, they have reached the age of maturity when a number of rights such as drinking, entering bars, or sex are now eligible. However, a more open world is also synonymous with students’ higher risks of getting involved in social evils, such as drugs or prostitution, which would definitely take a heavy toll on their health, as well as academic performance. As a result, they may not be able to continue to study due to deteriorating physical conditions or under-standard study results.
In short, students may drop out of college because of the unaffordable cost of studies and the irresistibility of social evils. I believe that one should be well-prepared for both of these problems before entering university so that they would not have to regretfully abandon their scholarly dream.
